Our History

Our Laboratory
The Sanger Contact Lens Center Laboratory started in 1960. Back then, we manufactured hard PMMA lenses. Now we manufacture a variety of state-of-the-art gas-permeable fluorosilicone acrylate lenses.
We specialize in torics, bifocals (aspheric multifocal, concentric and translating types), lenticular cuts for high prescriptions and cataracts, specialty lenses for keratoconus, ortho-k, GPC, dry eyes, sensitive eyes, post- operative and post laser surgery (LASIK) corrections, UV block and prosthetic lenses for a variety of ocular and lid concerns.

Our Founder
The Sanger Contact Lens Center was founded in Canada in 1959 by the late Fred Sanger. He was a recognized authority in his field, specializing solely in the fitting of contact lenses, particularly in their use as prosthetic and pathological eye aids, conditions in which glasses are of little or no benefit.
He was on the staff of the Toronto Western Hospital as a Contact Lens Consultant and for many years aided in corneal implant research at the Banting Institute. Fred Sanger lectured on advanced contact lens fitting throughout North America, was the founder and President of the Ontario Contact Lens Association, Secretary of the Contact Lens Examining Committee, and author of the Contact Lens Certification Curriculum for Ontario. He was influential in Canada’s first acrylic implant, designing and manufacturing the lenses that successfully corrected the vision of a man who had been blind for 22 years. All 5 of Fred’s children have followed in his footsteps and continue to bring you friendly and reliable service.

Vision correction impacts people of all ages, for a variety of reasons. We are here to help you review all options.

Never Be Without Your Reading Glasses Again. The “stick anywhere…go everywhere” reading glasses!

The Problem With Reading Glasses
Every year, billions of dollars are spent to engineer ever more beautiful, high-resolution displays for our computers and phones, but few have put the same kind of energy toward reading glasses resulting in little evolution since their invention late in the 13th century. Today over 30 million North Americans buy two pairs of reading glasses every year.
If you struggle with tiny text, you can increase the font size on your cell phone’s screen—but then you’re restricted to a keyhole view. Because your cell phone is always with you, we set out to develop thin, comfortable reading glasses that fit on the back of your phone. We’ve filled the innovation gap so that now your glasses are always with you.

Backed By Sophisticated Technology
At ThinOPTICS, we figured that it would take six months of development to make these glasses, but instead, it took over 30 months. Our challenge was to make our glasses fit comfortably. Not for 90%, but for 100% of all users. As we developed ThinOPTICS, we tested hundreds of prototypes on thousands of noses. Because ThinOPTICS has to work as well as your cell phone does, every single time you use them.

Free Replacement Glasses…For Life!
ThinOPTICS are the only reading glasses durable enough to be backed with a lifetime guarantee that warrants your glasses against defects, workmanship and failures under normal use forever!

We Guarantee a Perfect Fit
The ThinOPTICS bridge flexes while the nose pads grip to ensure a secure and comfortable fit on all noses. Not happy? Simply return your glasses within 30 days and we will provide a full refund no questions asked.

Take it Everywhere.. on your phone!
Attach ThinOPTICS to your favorite phone case or any hard flat surface with the universal pod and adhesive tape, included with purchase.

The Silhouette Rimless Collection of Eyewear Now at Sanger Contact Lens Centre & Opticians

The minimalist trend is here in a big way! The movement has inspired people to move into tiny homes, cut their wardrobes and donate their possessions. Silhouette, a global market leader, has brought this minimalist trend to eyewear with a collection of unique, lightweight, rimless eye glasses. Sanger Contact Lens Centre & Opticians is pleased to introduce this collection to the Halton community. Silhouette Rimless Eyewear is an innovative brand that pioneered rimless, hingeless, and screwless frames. The Silhouette Rimless Collection is best known for its technological advances in glasses design.
Rimless glasses have been around for a long time. Invented in the late 1880s in an effort to make eyeglasses more inconspicuous, they soon became a fashion statement, worn by politicians such as Theodore Roosevelt, scientists, professors, and anyone else looking for functional yet elegant eyewear. Many people think rimless frames make them appear more mature, trustworthy, and intelligent. Steve Jobs was another iconic figure who preferred a pair of round, rimless glasses.
There are benefits to wearing rimless frames beyond their appearance. Rimless glasses are lighter than full rim frames, so therefore more comfortable. And since the rims aren’t obstructing your view, your peripheral vision becomes wider and clearer. Rimless frames suit all types of faces, and can pretty much be considered Unisex, flattering both men and women.
The only problem with rimless glasses is that they are usually easy to break. Silhouette rimless frames however, has solved that problem. They are so well constructed that, even if plastic, will not corrode and are virtually impossible to break. Five years later, they still look like new. “Silhouette glasses may be very expensive but once someone purchases a pair, they never go back” says David Sanger, one of the owners in the family run business.
There is yet another benefit to Silhouette’s titanium frames: besides being the strongest, they are anti allergenic.
Founded in the mid 1960s, Silhouette, an Austrian eyewear brand has focused on making eyewear slimmer, lighter, and hingeless. The designers at Silhouette created a signature brand that emphasized innovation and technology. In 2002, the brand teamed up with NASA to send Silhouette into space. Because of their screwless, hingeless design, it made the brand easy to repair and the custom fit gave astronauts more stability in zero gravity. Sanger Contact Lens Centre and Opticians is proud to carry the line and invites everyone to come in and view the collection. 2406 Lakeshore Rd West (near Denningers) 905.845.4446 www.sangercontactlens.com

Sanger Contact Lens Centre Offers Help for Keratoconus Sufferers

Keratoconus is a progressive eye disease in which the normally round cornea thins and begins to bulge into a cone-like shape. This cone shape deflects light as it enters the eye on its way to the light-sensitive retina, causing distorted vision.
As the cornea becomes more irregular in shape, it causes progressive nearsightedness and irregular astigmatism to develop, creating additional problems with distorted and blurred vision. Glare and light sensitivity also may occur. Often, keratoconic patients experience changes in their eyeglass prescription every time they visit their eye care practitioner. At worse the steepening of the cornea can actually perforate resulting in a medical emergency.
As the disease progresses the surface of the cornea gets more and more irregular making it difficult for the person to get fitted for contact lenses. Many sufferers find they are unable to see with glasses.
Add to this the fact that many opticians have stopped offering hard lenses because they are so hard to fit and one can easily see how people with disease feel powerless and depressed as they discover they have no one who can help them.
Thankfully Sanger Contact Lens Centre not only helps keratoconic patients, they can restore their vision to 20/30 and sometimes even 20/20. “We have a product called scleral contact lenses” says David Sanger, one of the owners in the family run business. These gas permeable contact lenses are very large – designed to sit on the sclera and cover the entire eye. In doing so, scleral lenses functionally replace the irregular cornea with a perfectly smooth optical surface thus correcting vision problems. “Comfort wise, our patients tell us they are amazing.
Although Keratoconus is a rare disease, Sanger Contact Lens Centre treats many sufferers. “It is not unusual for us to have more than one person with the disease in the store at the same time” says David.
That is actually not surprising as the company has established itself since 1959 as specialists in the fitting of hard, gas permeable and soft lens.
Sanger Contact Lens Centre are also experts in fitting lenses for many other complex eye conditions such as complications from laser surgery, High Astigmatism and Dry Eyes.
In addition to regular and specialty contact lenses, the centre also carries a selection of brand name prescription eyewear frames, designer sunglasses and eyewear accessories.
